Not forgetting Orthodoxy: Having noted that orthodoxy (right belief) is not enough, I am not suggesting that it is not important. Far from it! Right belief is an irreplaceable element of any discipleship in the way of Jesus. However the church nearly always sees orthodoxy narrowly,  as a commitment to propositional truth, assuming that the knowledge of God is received through purely the cognitive functions. I am convinced that if we are to come to a full appreciation of God, our thinking about him must be right, but it must be complimented by othopraxy and orthopathy if we are to come to a full-orbed, biblical, engagement with (and knowledge of) God. This can be depicted in the following way:

As should be obvious by now, we need to develop our ways of knowing God to be able to be true disciples. But it goes beyond just adding right actions and feelings to the equation of right knowledge, I believe the place for us to start is by focusing on the action piece (see posts on action as sacrament.) Here’s the gig: we must move from trying to think our way into a new way of acting, but rather, we need to act our way into new way of thinking.

Here are some quotes taken from Alistair McGrath’s book, The Twilight Of Atheism. I have taken these from David May’s excellent summary of that book. What interests me is McGrath’s thesis that the relation of atheism to the corruption of religion in general and the church in particular. Atheism is more a protest movement than it is anything else. I have bolded the text where this is emphasized.  Read on…

I am starting a series of some favourite quotes. Feel free to interpret them. This one is particularly open-ended.

Eternal nothingness is OK if you’re dressed for it
The universe is merely a fleeting idea in God’s mind–a pretty uncomfortable thought, particularly if you’ve just made a down payment on a house

In our reflection today, Debs and I read 1 Peter 1Open Link in New Window which has so much to say about the connection between suffering and sanctification. The mystery of joy, of being saved, in the midst of sometimes severe suffering is surely the mark of a saint. But on reflecting on how many people we know who have given up the faith because of their inability (or unwillingness) to integrate redemptive suffering into their lives, we noticed another thing; namely that the more holy we become the more we will suffer. This is so because holiness conforms us to the nature of God, and in a fallen and as yet unredeemed world, that puts us at odds, not only with ourselves in some way, but also with our contexts. Because of this, God’s redeeming and sanctifying actions in our lives are experienced as a form of burning, of being purged, or as T.S.Elliot says below, we are “…redeemed from fire by fire.”
