O everlasting and Triune God,
I consecrate myself wholly to you today.
Let all my days offer you ceaseless praise,
My hands move to the rhythm of your impulses,
My feet be swift in your service,
My voice sing constantly of you,
My lips proclaim your message,
My eyes perceive you everywhere,
And my ears be attuned to your inspirations.
May my intellect be filled with your wisdom,
My will be moved by your beauty,
My heart be enraptured with your love,
And my soul be flooded with your grace.
Grant that every action of mine be done
For your greater glory
And the advancement of my salvation.

Amen.

Mohandas Gandhi, one of the most influential figures in modern social and political activism, considered these traits to be the most spiritually perilous to humanity…

  • Wealth without Work

  • Pleasure without Conscience

  • Science without Humanity

  • Knowledge without Character

  • Politics without Principle

  • Commerce without Morality

  • Worship without Sacrifice

Appropriate given the current political and social environment, don’t you think?

I have had the privilege for the last couple of days to connect with various church planters in the city of Austin, Texas.  It seems that God is up to a lot in this growing city which happens to be one of my favorite in Texas.

I've been staying with John  and Sherri Chandler along with their three kids during my time in Austin.  They just moved from the Seattle area about a month ago to start Austin Mustard Seed.  If you are in the Austin area and are wanting to find a fresh and organic way to live out your faith in community, you would probably enjoy checking out their website and joining one of their dream gatherings that are starting up this coming Sunday, September 7th.  You can learn about what this dream, some of the values as well as some of their core beliefs on their website.  I love the way John has expressed each of these things and I look forward to seeing how things will develop with this community of faith.

During my time here in Austin, I have had the chance to meet up a number of church planters in the city. John and I were able to meet up with well connected Kester and join him and others for the Austin Inklings.

I really enjoyed spending time with Jeff Mangum and Chris Marlow who lead a growing faith community called the Vista Community.  Chris blogs at Simply Missional. If you live in Williamson County, this is a church to check out.  These guys are down to earth and fun to hang with.

John and I had breakfast today with Brian Wallace this morning who serves at the First Evangelical Free Church, and then I had the chance to share with the Austin Church Planters Network a little bit about my journey in church planting with [nlcf] and Kairos Los Angeles. Church Planting Novice wrote up a short piece about my time with the network.

Jonathan Dodson helps to organize this group. It was great meeting him face to face, having been familiar with his blog - Creation Project.  He serves as the vision and teaching pastor at Austin City Life.  I love their website and was able to sneak a peek at their 2.0 one.  Their site was one of the sites that has inspired some of our redesign that we are in the process of doing at Kairos.

I was encouraged to get to meet and talk with a number of other church planters in this city.  I was encouraged by what God is doing.  May their influence increase.

This post is taken from the blog of one of my really good (and very bright)  friends, Mark Sayers. It adds further weight to all this discussion about networks and movements…

….Have been reading a bit about the future of organized crime. Fascinatingly crime is changing as our culture changes. The older traditional crime structures such as the Mafia and the Japanese Yakuza are struggling. Traditional organized crime structures thrive in migrant neighbourhoods with high social cohesion. However as social connection breaks down, and a more liquid way of living takes hold, and gentrification transforms inner city neighbourhoods; traditional organized crime structures are finding it hard to recruit younger members and flourish in the 21st century.

However a new kind of organized crime is developing in the West one that does not obey the traditional modes and rules. This new form of organized crime has its roots in the developing world, be it Central America, Nigeria or former Soviet Bloc countries. Whereas the old organized crime structures worked on systems of honour, commitment, hierarchy, central control and a strict set of rules, the new structures tend to be more cellular, chaotic and anarchic.

A classic example of this new kind of organized crime structured is the central American gang MS -13 which some law enforcement experts have labelled the Al Qeada of Central America. The gangs growth has been phenomenal, and the gang now has tens of thousands of members, and has now spread out of central America into South America, North America and Europe.

Is it just me or does all of this sound familiar?

The Solar Crash - Collage

- It was extraordinary to see relational networks converge, there was so much potential brimming, not just on stage but within the whole room.

- We live in a world desperately in need of spaces for meaningful connections

- There’s something deeply self-affirming about diversity

- Seeing this through from conception to reality was completely thrilling.

- One aspect I really loved was being able to empower people, to empower others. All my friends became talent scouts - seekers of creativity waiting to be revealed.

- Personally, nothing topped meeting people in the process of planning the event, and hearing of all the ways God is working in and through the people of this city.

- Christian’s shared about how they were surprised it wasn’t another lame Christian event

- Several artists shared with me how this event wasn’t simply about showcasing their stuff, or selling some paintings, but about exposing a piece of their soul.

- People shared with me about art’s incredible ability to heal, and express what words cannot.

I’ve already began dreaming up the next one, let me know if you’re interested in helping out!
