Real short orphanage news.

Justus from Uganda has come, with news that we have bought cooking equipment, rented a house, & started a weekly meeting with a list of 89 orphans, & 63 adults & they are all coming to hear the word though we have no money for food. I plan to send him back with $100 if I can afford it to start our orphan director with $10/mo & enough food to feed her & 1 orphan for two months with some stock of things like dry beans. I’m really short right now with a banking error, I think that produced $131 over draft that I can’t cover with US $. Specified donations can be used to buy 2 tents for $30 ea for the big crowd outside when it rains at our new about 10 X 10′ house as our orphanage & 150+ member church.

If I get more donations the ministry owes my personal account some money which I can use to cover the overdraft. The fastest way is a priority mail envelope or a www.newwaveministry.com credit card payment, but it will all work out somehow.

Her Amazing deliverance from murder!

She told me, when she was 17, she was riding a bus in DRCongo traveling to her spiritual mother in Uganda, when the bus was stopped by 6 well-armed Tutsi killing Interhomwe soldiers. The started taking those who looked like Tutsis off the bus to kill them. While they took the first ones she thought quickly & told the soldier who was getting her that one of the well-known Interhomwe leaders was her father. They asked his wife’s name, which she knew, so they said, “OK, you are a Hutu.” Because of God’s intervention they did not look at her palms, like they did with the others, which shows the pattern of Tutsis. They proceeded to kill 7 people that they took off the bus, & she heard them cry before dying with their bodies left on the road near the bus.

When they arrived in Uganda, she told the Moslem bus driver she was a Tutsi. He said, “Your God loves you so much!”

Who is my mother?

She has never been sure, until after our 1^st marriage in October, who her mother & father were. I understand better after hearing her stories of being delivered from murder twice by fast lies why lying is so common in Africa. Her first year was with the one we call Mama, because her actual mother wanted a boy & threatened abortion, but her father’s brother, who married her actual mother, loved w Providence and arranged her to be taken by his sister that we call Mama. Then her mothern accepted her back, but after a year, he saw that her mother might destroy her so he took her to his mother who raised her most of her childhood. Her Uncle told Grandma she might not live through the trip to go to our wedding & her about 90 yr old Grandma, said, “I want to go! If I die in the road, I die!” She was at our last of 4 weddingsJ & was so happy to host us in her home last week, even though she is too old to cook & pay all the expenses. Uncle Simon who approved our first wedding with no dowry lives with her & loaned her the travel money, because she insisted, while Mama (really her Aunt) paid for all the food for about 20 people & 5 of us in our travel to Goma.

Mama left her with Grandma, because she thought she would be killed by the Tutsi killers, but she sent money from Kinshasa in the west all the way to the Eastern border of DRCongo to support raising her. She did spend a short time, about ? yrs, back with her mother & uncle, but her mother said to her in anger, “I don’t have 5 children, I have 4″. It seems she rejected the child she got before marriage by her husband’s brother.

Her father-figure & Mama came up with various stories to tell her, because she told them that if her mother was her mother, she would kill herself. Mama recently cried when she wanted to Marry me & sent another Aunt to tell her that she was her real mother, but she had been born out of wed-lock, which is actually what happened with her true mother.

But God gave her a real Catholic mother & father, who love her & me so much, by revelation to both of them, confirmed by prophetic revelation of pastors who did not fully know why God was having them speak what they said. When Mama (her Aunt) had refused to support her at 15-17 she had dreams & prophecies that God was going to kill her if she didn’t start supporting her daughter. Her husband, who married her without paying dowry, as he approved for me, had a dream where God told him to go & take his daughter. Then after some delay someone prophesied, explaining to him who his daughter was. Her real father died a long time ago, but both of her mothers, Grandma, & her Uncle who said he was her father & loved her so much were all at the wedding.

My life was the opposite in some ways, because I never remember seeing either of my parents tell a lie & I never wondered if they were my real parents or if they loved me, but both of us have been so blessed by the generous support of our parents. Even now my parents give me twice as much as our typical monthly donations, which I use to pay all my personal US expenses, including repaying the child-support loan & the support that should end July 11. I often borrow from it for business or ministry expenses. But her parents have been so generous helping the ministry in Goma to not need any support from our donations yet & to help us with eating travel & good business sales through Mama.

There are 3 photos of 2 Grandmas from the previous week’s visit of Relatives in Goma DRC, & Gisenyi, Rwanda. The news & other photos are about visiting Leaders this last sweek in Gisenyi. To call me I’m getting almost daily calls that go through to 574 217 0552 so if you want, try at least a couple times before 3p EST. I usually get a couple USA calls that ring, but they are gone before I hear them. Amazing Prophetic Meeting in Gisenyi, Rwanda Today June 6, 2008, we had an amazing encounter with two great leaders who are a team in both Goma & Gisenyi. While Safari waited with Anny, his spiritual mother, he saw a vision of Provi (that’s what her family calls her) & I with only one face, but he did not know we were married, so he said, “Why? Are they two whites or two Africans?” We had about two hours of fellowship & revelations from the 3 most mature of us. I got more revelation, like visions, with them than I’ve had on this whole trip, which is typical for me. When I’m with prophetically gifted people, I often get visions & interpretations of visions or dreams. When I looked at their faces I saw both natural & spiritual strength. Safari is an apostolic & prophetic church planter of many churches in DRCongo & Gisenyi, Rwanda. He lives in Gisenyi, but does much work in more than one DRCongo area. Anny is a prophetic intercessor who is well known among leaders in Rwanda and elsewhere. I see myself as an apostolic teacher also functioning as a pastor of leaders. My wife is an apostolic, evangelist, & teacher, also functioning as a pastor of leaders. She has been having revelatory dreams often in the morning while I’m exercising & listening to good teaching I downloaded from www.morningstarministries.org. It’s good to have high energy & discipline, but I’d be happy to have more spiritual dreams. But God usually teams me up with people who have more active prophetic revelation than I. Anny saw us traveling to Taiwan, which confirms the revelation to Bienvenu that we would travel to Asia. Also I have unusual knowledge about Taiwan, because I did a long report on Taiwan about 40 years ago. I didn’t know why I chose that country. They said we would work in South Africa (where I’ve been invited to teach), but warned us not to go to Mozambique. Anny, said my wife would have twins, although she did not know that has been her desire & prayer. They said God was going to bless me with a son or sons, since so far I only have daughters. With tears in my eyes I say that Anny saw my daughter, Elizabeth working with me in New Wave Ministry, & continuing it after I pass away from active service. She did not know that I’ve planned to begin to fast & pray for Elizabeth, because right now she refuses to communicate with me, but she was with me planting the first two house churches in Burundi & told the whole group that it was the best church experience she had had in years. We were very close in her childhood, but she was severely wounded by my leaving home after my upset wife said she would tell the police falsely that I was dangerous & other false things her mother told her, like I did not love my children. She is two years older than my wife. But at this meeting I had more revelation than my wife, although she had many confirmations of previous dreams. All our hearts were truly knit together & God is fulfilling the prophetic word that he was still choosing our leaders in the New Wave-Goma area. I saw a vision of Safari having the glittering sword of the Lord & glittering armor for him and about 4 other warriors on each side of him. Then I saw an army of angels descend on Gisenyi, filling the place with His glory. After that, I saw Safari in a humble African house in humble African clothes sitting & getting wisdom, like I usually get it, just in thoughts & knowing things. A humble lady brought him vegetables that grow underground, like radishes. I believe they represent that God feeds our spirit through others that are humble & the nourishment He gives us, grows out of sight in humble places. Safari also saw a vision, which he drew on paper that he would establish great leaders for New Wave Ministry on 3 continents. There would be a strong bond between the leaders and that from Asia & Africa two other continents would be reached. One of those continents would also be reached from the 3rd continent, which was North America. Before he shared, I was surprised that Australia came into my mind. So I think that one of the two new continents was Australia. I have a heart for South America, but I know that many African Christians have a longing to take the gospel back to Europe. They did not know that God had spoken to Bienvenu & I that we would travel together to Asia. Safari also saw that I would spend more time in Africa than any other continent, which is what I desire. They told us that my office would not have to continue to be in my back-pack (my computer). I think it may be in Gisenyi, because our ministry is growing strong in nearby Goma, with many supportive relatives in both cities & I have desired to have our home in Rwanda, because is such a amazingly good place to raise children, have guests from many countries, with no Visa required for Americans & all of the countries we work in so far. The economy & infrastructure is rapidly growing in Rwanda & it is a safe refuge from wars & crime in nearby African countries. But Tanzania & Uganda are peaceful, too with improving government in both countries. I don’t care how all this happens, just as long as we can effectively make disciples who love Jesus with all their hearts! We’ve given up on plans to visit Burundi, because we don’t have the $350 2-day seminar expenses + travel & Visas, but I’d rather go when we can spend at least a week in the provinces where we are expanding. So instead we came to Gisenyi on Wed meeting with leaders Thursday, & now Friday after meeting this morning with Safari & Anny, we are meeting 3 other leaders including one who speaks English well, but now my wife is interpreting pretty well for me & helps the other interpreters. Right now they are discussing the shipwreck with dishonest Gabriel to find out what really happened because he made many false statements about my wife to other members. We still have about 100 house churches, although some have been discouraged, others have multiplied. I just explained that we should inform our members that he has been dis-fellowshipped to both protect the church & to bring him to repentance & restoration from greed resulting in dishonesty & theft. Today, Sun, June 8, 2008 I wept this morning for joy as my wife, in my arms, remembered more prophecy from her brother-in-law & told me her thoughts about coming to the USA. She told me over & over how he told her, “I see God on your bridegroom. I see the face of God.!” She told me she knew I had a lot of wisdom & experience in many things, as she wiped the tears from my face. She said she was happy that Safari & Anny had prophesied that Africa would be the foundation of our International Ministry. She said she didn’t want to live in the USA, because she was afraid the culture would corrupt her & was happy that they said, “You will only go to visit America. It will not be your home. Your home & your husband will be here in Africa most of the time.” She said she understood why her Visa had been delayed. Because God loves our ministry & it was important for her to stay in these times. She is in no hurry now to come to the USA & looks forward to moving to Gisenyi to work in Goma & with New Wave leaders in Goma & Safari in Gisenyi. That may change after she misses me, but she plans to wait until she gets her Rwandan-East African Passport in August to travel to Tanzania without the $50 Visa to see if she can get a Visa in a country where it is very easy now to get US visas. We will pray about whether to bring her here for the House2House conference & stay until my busy fall season is done in Nov, or if I come after the conference for a short Sep. trip while my business is slow. We’ve had a wonderful visit with David & her cousin Anifa for 2.5 wks which I’ll share more about later. Overview of the trip accomplishments This trip was very different from previous trips, just as my last USA “visit” was different than the previous returns to the USA. I’ll list the greatest accomplishments in the order of significance as I see them: 1. We built our good marriage relationship with much time together. 2. We got the dowry, civil, & traditional marriage ceremony’s finished so my wife feels free to do ministry anywhere without offending relatives or traditional thinking Christians. We’ve had no significant misunderstandings, since our civil wedding May 22. For some reason significant things happen to me on the 22nd of many, but not all, months. 3. I invested a lot of time with David Saku (Tanzania) & Justus (Uganda) seeing with my own eyes significant change in their lives & really grateful hearts for the time we spent together. I feel the most fruit has come from time I’ve spent with leaders like Bienvenu, & David in the past. 4. We spent 2 days this week sharing with 3 Goma New Wave leaders & divinely appointed partners Safari & Anny. I told my wife we should have regular leader training in July & August when my wife gets a house here in Gisenyi, because it is very close to our leaders in Goma. So we are rebuilding our DRCongo leadership through much time sharing & scripture-based training. 5. I’ve enjoyed teaching, a few times with David, in many places. You never know when someone’s life will be changed & decide to join us in the future. Sunday & Monday we go back to share in previous places. 6. We matured our business relationships & I bought many products that should give us good ministry-supporting income when they finally arrive or are found by the post-office. 7. I’ve almost finished writing “How to Get/Stay Younger” after having time to read again “Sugar Blues”. I think this is something I can sell for support in the USA, which could lead to selling many other books, like “The Passionate Heart of God” which I already finished & “My amazing Life” which I’ve started. This may fulfill my written goal/priority to publish & sell books. My gift in writing is to say the most important information without too many words. The almost finished book is very short, but life changing for most people. Utah has always been beautiful to me. All of my relatives live there and I have lots of childhood memories as we visited there. You see, I grew up in Wyoming and my parents would travel to Utah 3 to 4 times a year before we had interstate hi-ways.

But Utah is weird! I can't figure out why so many of my cousins, uncles and nephews can be highly successful professionals and live the lie of Mormonism! It just blows me away! 

Take for instance the whole polygamy thing we have heard so much about on TV. First begun by early leaders as early as 1831 (Book of Mormon published 1830) and became more public as their journey progressed. Finally, it was told by prophets that men had to have more than one wife to enter heaven, depending on which heaven you are referring to.  They actually had to abolish polygamy in Utah in 1870 so that the Utah Territory could become a state, or else the Federal Government was going to destroy their economy in Utah. In 1862, the American Congress passed the Morrill act which outlawed polygamy and promised to destroy them economically.

POLYGAMY

When establishing the LDS Church, Joseph Smith recorded numerous revelations he claimed to receive, often in answer to questions about the Bible, which are now included in the Doctrine and Covenants, part of the LDS canon. In answer to his question as to why many of the Old Testament leaders had more than one wife, Smith received what is now known as Section 132. Although the revelation was not recorded until 1843, Smith may have received it in the 1830s and married his first plural wife, Fanny Alger, in 1835. Polygamy was not openly practiced in the Mormon Church until 1852 when Orson Pratt, an apostle, made a public speech defending it as a tenet of the church. From 1852 until 1890, Mormon Church leaders preached and encouraged members, especially those in leadership positions, to marry additional wives.

A majority of the Latter-day Saints never lived the principle. The number of families involved varied by community; for example, 30 percent in St. George in 1870 and 40 percent in 1880 practiced polygamy, while only 5 percent in South Weber practiced the principle in 1880. Rather than the harems often suggested in non-Mormon sources, most Mormon husbands married only two wives. The wives usually lived in separate homes and had direct responsibility for their children. Where the wives lived near each other, the husbands usually visited each wife on a daily or weekly basis. While there were the expected troubles between wives and families, polygamy was usually not the only cause, although it certainly could cause greater tension. Since polygamy was openly practiced for only a short time by Mormons, there were no established rules about how family members should relate to each other. Instead, each family adapted to their particular circumstances.

Reactions from outside the church to statements about polygamy were immediate and negative. In 1854 the Republican party termed polygamy and slavery the "twin relics of barbarism." In 1862 the United States Congress passed the Morrill Act, which prohibited plural marriage in the territories, disincorporated the Mormon Church, and restricted the church's ownership of property. The nation was in the midst of the Civil War, however, and the law was not enforced. In 1867 the Utah Territorial Legislature asked Congress to repeal the Morrill Act. Instead of doing that, the House Judiciary Committee asked why the law was not being enforced, and the Cullom Bill, an attempt to strengthen the Morrill Act, was introduced. Although it did not pass, most of its provisions later became law. Out of a number of other bills introduced during the 1870s against polygamy, only the Poland Act passed, in 1874. It gave district courts all civil and criminal jurisdiction and limited the probate courts to matters of estate settlement, guardianship, and divorce.

The Mormons continued to practice polygamy despite these laws, since they believed that the practice were protected by the freedom of religion clause in the Bill of Rights. To test the constitutionality of the laws, George Reynolds, Brigham Young's private secretary, agreed to be tried. In 1879 the case reached the Supreme Court, which upheld the Morrill Act: "Laws are made for the government of actions, and while they cannot interfere with mere religious belief and opinion, they may with practices."

In 1882 Congress passed the Edmunds Act, which was actually a series of amendments to the Morrill Act. It restated that polygamy was a felony punishable by five years of imprisonment and a $500 fine. Unlawful cohabitation, which was easier to establish because the prosecution had to prove only that the couple had lived together rather than that a marriage ceremony had taken place, remained a misdemeanor punishable by six months imprisonment and a $300 fine. Convicted polygamists were disenfranchised and were ineligible to hold political office. Those who practiced polygamy were disqualified from jury service, and those who professed a belief in it could not serve in a polygamy case. All registration and election officers in Utah Territory were dismissed, and a board of five commissioners was appointed to direct elections.

Because the Edmunds Act was unsuccessful in controlling polygamy in Utah, in 1884 Congress debated legislation to plug the loopholes. Finally, in 1887, the "hodge-podge" Edmunds-Tucker Bill passed. It required plural wives to testify against their husbands, dissolved the Perpetual Emigrating Fund Company (a loan institution that helped members of the church come to Utah from Europe), abolished the Nauvoo Legion militia, and provided a mechanism for acquiring the property of the church, which already was disincorporated by the Morrill Act. The Cullom-Struble Bill with even stricter measures was debated in 1889, but the Mormon Church helped to prevent its passage by promising to do away with polygamy.

All of these pressures had an impact on the church, even though they did not compel the Latter-day Saints to abolish polygamy. Church leaders as well as many of its members went into hiding--on the "underground" as it was called--either to avoid arrest or to avoid having to testify. Mormon Church President John Taylor died while in hiding. His successor, Wilford Woodruff, initially supported the continued practice of polygamy; however, as pressure increased, he began to change the church's policy. On 26 September 1890 he issued a press release, the Manifesto, which read, "I publicly declare that my advice to the Latter-day Saints is to refrain from contracting any marriages forbidden by the law of the land." The Manifesto was approved at the church's general conference on 6 October 1890.

Rather than resolving the polygamy question, however, according to one historian: "For both the hierarchy and the general membership of the LDS Church, the Manifesto inaugurated an ambiguous era in the practice of plural marriage rivaled only by the status of polygamy during the lifetime of Joseph Smith." Woodruff's public and private statements contradicted whether the Manifesto applied to existing marriages. As a result of the Manifesto, some men left plural wives; others interpreted it as applying only to new marriages. All polygamous general authorities (church leaders including the First Presidency, Council of the Twelve Apostles, church patriarch, First Council of Seventy, and Presiding Bishopric) continued to cohabit with their wives. Based on impressionistic evidence in family histories and genealogical records, it appears that "most" polygamists followed the general authorities' example.

Neither did all new plural marriages end in 1890. Although technically against the law in Mexico and Canada, polygamous marriages were performed in both countries. Mormon plural families openly practiced polygamy in Mexico; the Canadian government allowed Mormon men to have only one wife in the country, so some men had a legal wife in the United States and one in Canada. In addition, a few plural marriages were performed in the United States.

During the Senate investigation in 1904 concerning the seating of Senator-elect Reed Smoot, a monogamist but a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Mormon Church President Joseph F. Smith presented what historians have called the "Second Manifesto" on 7 April 1904. It included provisions for the church to take action against those who continued to perform plural marriages and marry plural wives. Matthias Cowley and John W. Taylor, both apostles, continued to be involved in performing or advocating new plural marriages after 1904, and, as a result, Cowley was disfellowshipped and Taylor excommunicated from the church. In 1909 a committee of apostles met to investigate post-Manifesto polygamy, and by 1910 the church had a new policy. Those involved in plural marriages after 1904 were excommunicated; and those married between 1890 and 1904 were not to have church callings where other members would have to sustain them. Although the Mormon Church officially prohibited new plural marriages after 1904, many plural husbands and wives continued to cohabit until their deaths in the 1940s and 1950s.

Fundamentalist groups who believe that the church discontinued polygamy only because of government pressure continued the practice. As they were discovered by the LDS Church, they were excommunicated. Some of these polygamists have appointed leaders and continue to live in groups, including those in Colorado City (formerly Short Creek), Arizona, and Hilldale, Utah. Others, such as Royston Potter, practice polygamy but have no affiliation with an organized group.

So, that is a short version of why the prophet had to have "vision" to save Mormonism. The current president of the LDS in Utah apparently has authority to overwrite previous prophets in their history.

I am angered and perplexed why my modern day Internet savy relatives can be so blind to at least face the dark history. OK, accept the faults and mistakes of the past zeal for free religion and seek truth. I love these folks and can't even deal with the seemingly impossible task of seeing a true vision of Jesus. However, they are so close and yet so far away from a true faith. The social stigma is huge in Utah. My 13 nephews were raised to at least become an Eagle Scout and go on a 2 year mission for the church, period. That is the benchmark for their careers in Utah culture.

I was browsing for a wedding anniversary card at the store yesterday; at least I did not forget. The more I looked the more I could not find the right card until i noticed another man about my age looking as well. Our eyes met and I said,"You too huh?'

"Yea, I just drove home and noticed one of those balloon thingies tied to the front door, then I kept going. And here I am."

"How many years for you?" I commented.

"Ten years. But at least I remembered," he said sheepishly. " On our eighth, both of us totally forgot until our friends, who were in our wedding, started calling asking us what our plans were," he said.

"34 for us," I said, expecting the usual wide eyed look of approval or interest.

"Congratulations," we both said as we shook hands.

Small conversation with another man looking for similar reasons helped me pick my card. It did not matter which card I picked as much as my intent to share a wonderful day with this person who has endured me for all of these years. That is no small thing!
