O everlasting and Triune God,
I consecrate myself wholly to you today.
Let all my days offer you ceaseless praise,
My hands move to the rhythm of your impulses,
My feet be swift in your service,
My voice sing constantly of you,
My lips proclaim your message,
My eyes perceive you everywhere,
And my ears be attuned to your inspirations.
May my intellect be filled with your wisdom,
My will be moved by your beauty,
My heart be enraptured with your love,
And my soul be flooded with your grace.
Grant that every action of mine be done
For your greater glory
And the advancement of my salvation.

Amen.

http://tallskinnykiwi.typepad.com/tallskinnykiwi/2008/09/my-birthday-tod.

My birthday today. I had a big bath, coffee with real cream and now my kids are going to make crepes for me. If they get their lazy butts up, that is. Mum from Australia just called and I chatted with my sister.

And there are 20 birthday messages on my FaceBook wall. THANKS YOU GUYS!!!!!!!

Because we travel so much and because I am a bit of a geek, I usually get digital presents. This year, someone has put up a Wikipedia article on me. Its not 100% percent accurate but I guess its a beginning and a wonderful present.

Unfortunately, there were no links to external sources and it has been FLAGGED as being highly suspect. Would you like to add some links and edits? Be my guest. The link is here on Wikipedia. Someone has put me down as a "blogger" and thats fine with me. Your edits will be a great birthday present. Actually, I cant remember most of my articles and contributions so if you know of one, dig it up and put a link to it. MUCH THANKS!!!!!!

Last week Ravi examined the King David’s failure to remain faithful to his wife, and how his infidelity created more problems for him and his kingdom. Of course, David, being a man after God’s own heart, learns his lesson, and doesn’t repeat that mistake again. Well, not quite. Today, Ravi looks at the effect of David’s faithlessness to his family, and shows us how to be better parents.

Mohandas Gandhi, one of the most influential figures in modern social and political activism, considered these traits to be the most spiritually perilous to humanity…

  • Wealth without Work

  • Pleasure without Conscience

  • Science without Humanity

  • Knowledge without Character

  • Politics without Principle

  • Commerce without Morality

  • Worship without Sacrifice

Appropriate given the current political and social environment, don’t you think?

For those of you who wanted to see the Church Basement Roadshow but couldn't make it to any of the shows: here's a video of the whole show at Disciples' Fellowship Birmingham!

(Looks like a couple of people took up their invitation to dress up, and one boldly joined in.)

In the spirit of Jeff Foxworthy, I was just thinking up some ideas for my session at GodblogCon in a few weeks when I teach on the missional church in the internet age. You might be a faith blogger, I was thinking . .

IF . . .

- if you sit in the back row of the church because thats where the wifi signal is the strongest

- if your sermons allow both comments and trackbacks

- if you tithe through a widget

- if you think committing the original sin is getting tempted by the latest Apple

- if you pray that God will allow you to upload your photo to the Lamb's Book of Life

- if your prayers are less than 140 characters because thats all Twitter allows

- if you ever wonder why the domain of Satan doesn't have its own URL

- if you think Jesus' command to Peter to "Feed my sheep" was to allow RSS syndication

- if you think streams in the desert is a blog from Las Vegas

. . . then you just might be a faith-blogger!

Now thats funny! I don't care who you are! But now its your turn to throw me a bone. If you add your own faith blogger joke in the comments, I might even use it in Las Vegas at GodBlogCon, which is part of the larger BlogWorldExpo.

I just reposted a 2 year old post on new atheism because it got messed up. I also added a few new links to update it.

Some things I’ve found recently (and way back when that I hadn’t blogged):

I’m a huge advocate for cross-gender friendships, that men and women can be friends. But, I also know in the contexts I live and work in, I’m not as vocal about it as I’d like to be. Biggest value-add: un-objectifies women. I’ve not blogged volumes about it as my virtual friend Dan Brennan over at Faith Dance, and I really respect his thoughtful insights about how to navigate those sticky issues, especially in an oversexed society.

Compare and contrast the “10 commandments” for avoiding any hint of sexual immorality vs. this Eugene Peterson quote and follow-up reflections:

I’ve not lived cautiously. I have friendships with women. I touch them. I’ve been more careful in school than I was in the parish, where everyone knows me. It’s different now because someone can come to my office and we can have a deep talk and the next day I won’t know his or her name. That didn’t happen in a church setting. So I’m more careful now. But I’m not obsessive. These are my friends. Touch is a human thing, not just a sexual thing. It is dehumanizing to deny touch. Is sex a contagious disease? Sex is a danger, but money is a danger too. Do you refuse to take a salary because money is a danger?

And here’s the question, put forth by Dan Brennan,

Is it possible for cross-sex friendships to flourish in our church communities with more constructive meanings than the appearance of sexual immorality? You see if we are training church leaders with a socially constructed meaning of men and women with taken-for-granted conventional assumptions, I would argue that we may not be pursuing social justice at a fundamental relational level in our communities.

My answer is yes. Where, you ask? Well, that’s a tougher question. 1 qualifer: not everyone can do this.
